The Veterans Memorial Park project was first authorized by the Florence City Council in 1998 with the approval of a donation of a parcel of city-owned land on Bay St in Old Town Florence. This land was the vacated extension of Kingwood Street. The land was donated in perpetuity to the veterans of Florence for use as a Veterans Memorial Park.
Located on the west side of Bay St in Old Town Florence, this small piece of land – because it extends out into the Siuslaw River – will allow a boardwalk to be built into the river, not only as a tourist attraction to the area, but also primarily so that special water connected services can be continued on certain holidays. It will allow veterans groups for example, to continue a more than 60 year tradition of conducting water services on the Siuslaw River each Memorial Day in honor and memory of veterans lost in past wars and especially for those lost at sea.
Phase I of this project has been concluded – Phase I being the construction of the necessary parking facilities required for the project.
Phase II Construction of the flagpole area is in progress.
Phase III Construction of the Memorial Brick Wall is in progress.
